The Process
In order to prepare for the Wax Museum, you need to pick a "Famous Missourian" to research. Look at the links and read about the Famous Missourians. You need to decide which people should be included in the museum. On the "Application", choose your five favorite Missourians who should be in the Wax Museum. Write them in order of importance (1=most important) and explain why they should be in the Wax Museum. The "Museum Director" (teacher) will evaluate the applications and decide the final lineup for the Museum.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 1: Gathering the Facts
1. Once you know your Missourian, you need to research. You will be put with a partner who has the same Famous Missourian as you. When you meet this person you need to divide into 2 jobs, the reader and recorder.
Reader: You will read the websites and books aloud to the recorder. Together, you and the recorder will determine which information is important.
Recorder: You will listen to websites and books that the reader reads. After the two of you decide what is important, you will record the information in your own words onto the graphic organizers.
2. There are 4 graphic organizers you will need to print.
-Sources: You need to write down where you find every piece of information you are going to use in your report. Every useful website, book, article, etc. will need to be recorded on the sources page. You need at least 3 different sources.
-Childhood and Background: This is where you will record information about your person's childhood. Who are their parents and siblings, when and where were they born, what did they do as a child, ect. You need at least 5 facts about their childhood.
-Reasons for fame : This is where you tell why your person is famous. Talk about their career and their accomplishments. You need at least 8 facts about their reasons for fame. You will need to print two copies of this graphic organizer.
-Later Years : This is where you will write what happened as they got older. Talk about their spouse and children, their retirement, their death (if applicable) and what they did as they got older. You need at least 4 facts about their later years.
3. Go to the Links page and read through the different links for your Famous Missourian. Record notes on your graphic organizer as you go. You may also use library books and encyclopedias as a source.
4. Once you have finished taking notes, you are ready to begin writing your paper.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 2: Writing the Pamphlet
1. This will be a five paragraph formal document about your Missourian. Because it is a formal paper, you will not use the words I, you, me, we, ours, yours, mine, etc. Instead you will use your Missourian's name and words like he, she or they.
2. You will share the notes you took with your partner, but you will each create your own pamphlet, written in your own words.
3. The five sections:
a. Introduction: This section will introduce your famous Missourian. Make sure their name is in the first sentence. Write a brief introduction about your person and tell why they are famous. Remember, this is a brief introduction. You will get to write more details later. You also need to tell what will be included in the rest of the paper (childhood and background, reasons for fame, and later years). This section needs to be at least 5 sentences.
b. Childhood and background. This is where you will write about your person's childhood. Who are their parents and siblings, when and where were they born, what did they do as a child, ect. This section needs to have at least 6 sentences.
c. Reasons for fame: This is where you write about why your person is famous. Talk about their career and accomplishments. How did they "make it big"? You need at least 8 sentences in this section.
d. Later years: This is where you will write what happened as they got older. Write about thier spouse and children, their retirement, their death (if applicable) and what they did as they got older. This section needs to be at least 5 sentences.
e. Conclusion: Explain how your person contributed to Missouri. What makes this person memorable? This section needs to be at least five sentences.
4. Your pamphlet needs to be edited by at least 2 students and one adult. Please have your editors sign the bottom of your pamphlet.
5. Final copy: You need to type your final copy of your pamphlet in Microsoft word using a size 12 or 14 font. You also need to put a small picture of your famous Missourian at the top of your pamphlet. You can probably find one on one of the websites on the links page. Staple rough draft and notes to the back of your final copy. Don't forget to type a final copy of your sources.
6. Your final copy of your pamphlet will be handed out during the wax museum.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 3: The Poster
1. Using a piece of posterboard, you will draw a map of Missouri. You can use an overhead or LCD projector to trace Missouri. Here is a website that has a good map of Missouri. Your map needs to be big, at least 2 feet wide.
2. After you have your map, you need label the following cities: Joplin, Kansas City, St. Louis, Jefferson City, and Springfield. Use a dot to show where these cities are.
3. Label the city your Missourian is from and mark this city with a star.
4. Draw and label the Missouri and Mississippi rivers.
5. Write the name of your Missourian in large, neat lettering at the top of your poster.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 4: The Speech
1. You need to write a one minute speech about your famous Missourian to perform in the Wax Museum. As with the paper, you will be writing your own speech, but you may share the notes you took with your partner.
2. Because you will be giving the speech from your Missourian's point of view, you need to use the personal pronouns I, me, we, our, etc.
3. The speech needs to be written in chronological order, starting with their birth and ending with their death (if applicable). Write about the most important events in your Missourian's life.
4. Type the speech and print off 2 copies, one for your teacher and one for you to memorize.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 5: The Wax Museum
1. Practice, practice, practice! You need to have your entire speech memorized before the Wax Museum. Say your speech over and over again with lots of expression. Remember, you are pretending to be this famous Missourian, so try to project their personality in your speech. You will not be able to use notecards or your paper copy of your speech during the Wax Museum, so it is very important that it is memorized.
2. You need to find a costume similar to your famous Missourian. I am not asking you to buy or rent anything, but if you would like to that's fine. If you are having trouble coming up with a costume, write down what you are looking for on the "Costume swap" chart paper. The teacher and other students will try to help you come up with something for the Wax Museum.
3. A few days before the Wax Museum we will begin videotaping for our Famous Missourian imovie. On your assigned day, you will need to perform your speech for the class in costume. Make sure your speech is memorized!
4. On the day of the Wax Museum, you will need to be in full costume. Your teacher will help you put your poster up behind where you will be standing for your speech. Your teacher will also give you a sticker to put on your hand for your "button". Other students, teachers and parents will walk around the museum. When someone presses your button, you will come to life and say your speech. Have a bottle of water handy because you will be saying your speech a lot during the Wax Museum.
